about

Validate Me is about someone you know. Yes, you do. The “smartest person in the room,” the one who saw that show off-Broadway first, the one who won’t let you get the last word. Social media pushes us all towards this, unfortunately. Infinite knowledge at our fingertips, news shouted at us from notifications no matter where we are. Echo chambers that encourage you to go deeper into some niche topic or show until suddenly you’re a walking advertisement for it.

More than that, this makes you in-the-know of this thing, so much so that you derive your value from this status—almost always, more value than those who don’t know this same thing to the same extent. In a bygone era, this person might have just been merely a “hipster.” But this term doesn’t quite encapsulate, doesn’t quite wrap its arms around the idea fully.

Another way to look at this song might be as a send up of the “well, actually” guy. This song veers in and out of sections, from verses reminiscent of The Raconteurs, to catchy riffs from the Arctic Monkeys playbook, to a heavy breakdown section that embodies Gooseberry’s unique style all on its own.

lyrics

I’m so sarcastic I can’t tell you what it is I believe in anymore
I’m so fantastic
I love what you love until you do
And then I hate it like I’ve never hated anything before
So dramatic
But I didn’t ask to be cast as the lead
It’s such a burden ensuring the world keeps turning all around me

How could you not know that thing that nobody does
Except for me?

An intelligent mind
That’s what they call me
Unintelligent design
I’m a god of my own creation
Tell me you would agree
and validate me

This shirt I’m wearing is a reference to a show that you don’t know
I love that song you love except I heard about it
Seven months ago
I can’t help it if I was destined to save the day
Mop up disaster that was crafted by my bad habits
A daily charade

How could you not know that thing that nobody does
Except for me?

An intelligent mind
That’s what they call me
Unintelligent design
I’m a god of my own creation
Tell me you would agree
and validate me

How could you not know that thing that nobody does
Except for me?

An intelligent mind
That’s what they call me
Unintelligent design
I’m a god of my own creation
Tell me you would agree
and validate me
